In the heart of Ottawa’s historical and hip Byward Market, the Arts Court redevelopment is set to revitalize the capital’s arts and culture precinct. ArtHaus Condos is proud to be a key component of the mix-used project, which is destined by become a cornerstone building as we move forward into Canada’s 150th. Enshrining this historic event into this transformative project, an Ottawa 2017 pin was placed into the building foundation in December to recognize that the new OAG will open during Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations.
Construction has progressed at an impressive pace over a the site on Daly Avenue in the heart of the retail, arts and theatre district. Since the summer of 2015, workers removed 62 million kilograms of rock from the site. The concrete work for the public sector and the structural steel installation, with the exception of the Black Box catwalks and travelling beams, has been completed. By the time the project is finished, approximately 14,851 cubic metres of concrete will have been used. More than 323,638 kilograms of rebar have been used for the structure – roughly the same weight as 23 standard OC Transpo buses. The tower crane was extended in 2016 and is currently at 100 metres, which is taller than the Peace Tower. The contractor continues to work on enclosing all of the floors, and installing the necessary mechanical and electrical infrastructure for the new OAG.
Currently within Arts Court, the demolition and reconstruction of a new staircase (“Stair A”) will proceed once structural upgrades to Arts Court roof have been completed. This staircase will connect to the new OAG building, and eventually acts as an emergency exit for both Arts Court and the new OAG building.
Over the last few weeks, the project reached an exciting milestone as the 23rd ArtHaus Condos floor (19 of 23) of the tower was completed! The concrete topping for the OAG north and south roof-top terraces were poured in February. Work is moving ahead on the new structures as well as within the existing interior of the Arts Court building. The future Ottawa Art Gallery’s concrete structure is now complete!
Look out for more exciting construction milestones ahead this month at ArtHaus Condos.
