Chefs from the city’s finest restaurants and hotels can always be found shopping at La Bottega. At first catering to Italian immigrant families, Bottega has grown in popularity as Ottawa’s favourite Italian grocer. This is the place to go for quality ingredients to make your guests an authentic Italian creation. The quality of the pasta you use will determine how delicious the end product tastes. You want quality? Go for handmade pasta. One of the finest handmade pastas is called “la Campofilone”, a traditional egg pasta made with free range eggs and compassionate farming-and it only takes 1 or 2 minutes to cook! The Fettuccine al peperoncino ($7.99 at La Bottega) is a long, flat pasta that is flavoured with hot peppers, so tasty it doesn’t even need a red sauce! Toss with Bottega’s quality extra-virgin olive oil, fresh herbs, pepper flakes, garlic and top with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano or Pecorino Romano cheese. Don’t forget to try Bottega’s own Italian Cocktail recipe to make your evening perfecto!

Lapointe

LaPointe’s downtown fish market is a staple on the Byward Market. Lapointe Fish Ltd. has been owned and operated by the Vivian family for over hundred and forty years and is now currently being run by the third generation, who grew up watching their grandfather and fathers run a fresh fish business. With an array of fish and seafood, both fresh and frozen, from all over the world, this is a one stop shop for seafood night. Try a Pan Seared Albacore Tuna served on Market Green Beans and Rice Pilaf. A simple way to prepare fish is by searing: to create a charred crust. It’s quick, it’s easy and it lets you get the most taste out of quality fish. Get your pan as hot as you can, coat the cooking surfaces of the tuna steaks with a bit of oil with a high smoke point (corn, canola, peanut – not olive oil or walnut oil), then fry the tuna for as little time as you can get away with. About 45-60 seconds per side. Head over to the Byward Square’s Wine Rack and ask for the perfect wine pairing such as a light red or strong dry southern French or Spanish rosé.
