Griffintown ranks as one of Montreal’s greatest success stories in recent years. Its potential long neglected, at one time it was the centre of the city’s blue-collar community, with its proximity to the Lachine Canal making it an industrial hub employing the many workers who lived nearby. When the canal closed down to shipping, the area fell into disrepair, only for it to rise up over the last decade to become one of the city’s most innovative, hip new urban hot spots.
A wonderful place to live, with high-rise condominiums and beautifully repurposed industrial spaces, it’s a vibrant place to call home! Offering a wide range of things to do, the prosperous area gives residents both proximity to the city, and a varied, diverse mix of culture to call its own.
Griffintown is already famous for their amazing variety of popular restaurants, making it a favourite for foodies from all over. One of the most popular is Grinder, a one-of-a-kind destination with a varied, extensive menu, raw bar, and surf n’ turn options to share. Marché Italien Le Richmond is your destination for Italian cuisine, with both dining areas and even a shop so you can buy some fresh pasta and sauces if you want to cook something up yourself!
Trendy shops and hot spots
One of the most innovative collections of shops to open in some time is Griffintown’s “Must Society,” which is a partner of the project and is a series of interconnected retail spaces selling everything from kitchenware, décor, gorgeous furniture and electronics, to baked goods and stuff for your garden! Plus, check out E.R.A. Vintage Wear for a huge selection of incredible, vintage clothing from haute couture labels. And if you like live music, New City Gas is one of the coolest venues in town, a top spot for hot up and coming acts, conveniently right down the street from two of the area’s best bars, Pub Burgundy Lion and Le Drinkerie!
Discover your inner artist
Whether you’re an art aficionado or an artist yourself, the Montreal Art Centre located in the heart of Griffintown is a huge part of the community, with regular exhibitions, as well as shared studio spaces. Aspiring artists can also take a class at the Griffintown Art School – where you can try your hand at painting, sculpting, drawing and more.
Active, healthy living is something that’s easy to do in Griffintown. A summertime bike ride along the Lachine Canal is a favourite summer time activity for many. Start out at the Atwater market and finish at the beautiful Rene Levesque Park. If you’d like something a bit more intense, Cardio Plein Air offers outdoor classes in the Faubourg Sainte-Anne Park for all levels.
