Wintertide à La Villeray

Villeray’s Got Soul

Villeray is one of those Montreal neighbourhoods, which, simply put, has soul. The Castelnau condominium project is superbly located at the very nexus of Little Italy, Jean Talon Market, and the unparalleled beauty of Jarry Park, all delightfully rich, not-to-be-missed Montreal fixtures. The borough is also home to the Maison de la Culture, several sports and leisure amenities and much more. This truly multicultural and vibrant district is the perfect urban setting in which to raise a family. So it shouldn’t be surprising that winter in this sector is nothing less than engaging.

Winter Mecca

When it’s cold enough and the ice is right, skating fans are in luck. Little Italy Park sets up a free family skating rink each year, open 7 days a week. Jarry Park sweeps its pond each winter to open a free skating rink as well, and a festive atmosphere complete with music and decorations takes it to the next level. The Park offers hockey players two rinks as well. It’s always a good idea to check conditions online before heading out with your skates in tow.

If you make your way to the Park Extension area of Jarry Park’s scenic winter expanse, sledding and snow tubing are also both very viable options for ways to harmonize with the elements! No matter what your age or background, there really is something for everyone at what many consider Montreal’s best park.

Viva l’Italia!

If you’re looking to warm up this winter by partaking in some spirited cultural experiences, you may want to check out Little Italy’s Casa d’Italia. The community center sustains, promotes and develops Italian-Canadian culture throughout greater Montreal. The center offers activities range from traditional feasts to modern festivals. Recently renovated and transformed, the Casa brings people together for various social and cultural soirees, and also organizes educational events–everything from Italian language classes to cooking courses. For a full program of upcoming events, check here. Naturally, the neighbourhood is also the place to be when on the hunt for the most delicious Italian food in Montreal.

To Market, To Market

Located in the heart of Little Italy, the Jean-Talon Market, opened in 1933, is one of the oldest public markets in Montreal, and one of the largest in North America. It is known for its range of seasonal local and international produce. Enjoy a bustling atmosphere, even throughout the winter season, with vendors continuing to operate from within giant tents. To many Montrealers, the Market is like a small village, a place where merchants and customers alike have gathered for generations. It is not only one of the best places to go for high quality produce, but also: flowers, spices, oils, cheese, meat, fish artisanal baked goods, and other delectable products from all over Quebec!
